Store Alarm Triggers Response

Sometimes you can be under a tremendous amount of stress and not even realize it until something crops up to drive it home. You’ve become so used to feeling this way, that it’s just the norm now. It isn’t. Life as a nurse is certainly never dull, so it should be no of no surprise to anyone that even during nonworking hours nurses jump to attention when they hear their call.

I was reminded of this just a few weeks ago as I perused the clothing racks in a large department store. I had allowed my mind to wander the world away as I pushed hangers back and forth trying to find the right size in the perfect top I have ever seen. My thoughts had strayed to whether I would have lunch at the food court, or at home, what I would make for dinner, and whether I would force myself to go to the gym in between.

Then, it happened. The security alarm sounded at the front door and my immediate reaction was to determine its location, fully believing that it was the bed alarm of a patient in need. The good news is that no one was around to see my response, and it only took a few minutes for my heart rate to return to normal.

It just goes to show you, though, that even when a nurse is off duty, we are always on duty, ready to tackle any eventuality that comes our way.
