I work in the E.R at my local hospital and it was my night to answer phones at the nurse’s desk. We get a lot of calls from people who live on the outskirts of town who don’t want to drive all the way to the hospital if it’s not a huge emergency. The phone rings and I answer the call:
Me: Hartford General Hospital, You have reached the E.R. What can I do for you?
Caller: Well today my son spilled vinegar on himself and now he has a bright red painful rash, It’s not creating blisters or anything but it’s hurting him.
Me: Well, I have never heard of a rash from vinegar but I guess it’s possible.
Another Nurse: Ask her if it was boiling at the time she got it on her.
-Everyone around the desk Laughs-
Same Nurse As before: I’ve been doing this a long time, sometimes people don’t give you all the details, so you have got to ask.
Me:(to the caller) Was it hot?
Caller: yes it has been really hot today.
Me: No, Was the vinegar hot or boiling when it was spilled?
Caller: Well um, of course, it was, isn’t that obvious from me telling you that there was a rash?.
Me: Your son doesn’t have a rash he has a burn. You may need to be seen in the ED.
Caller: is that really necessary, I live 20 miles away. Can’t you just prescribe something over the phone?
Sometimes you have to bite your tongue and hope that some people are not the only hope for the human race.Like
